This year Cornwall’s tech community have celebrated local women in tech with a variety of events and activities throughout the year.
Google Women Tech Makers South West
The county hosted its first Women Tech Makers South West event this year with speakers and support from Google WTM, bringing students together with women in a variety of tech roles and organisations. Attendees experienced hands-on coding workshops, developed Bots and took time to find out more about what it’s like to work in the tech sector and the numerous career pathways available locally. Software Engineering Apprenticeships
This year budding Software Developer Jordan Barkway who attended one of our first Missions to Mars Coding experiences secured herself an apprenticeship at Bluefruit Software. Jordan has also become one of our mentors on the Mission to Mars programme, helping and encouraging others into careers in tech. She was interviewed for BBC Spotlight highlighting careers and opportunities in the tech sector here in Cornwall.
Global Destination for Female Digital Nomads
Recently BBC Radio 4 visited Cornwall as part of their In Business show on Digital Nomads, and Cornwall as a top global destination. Software Cornwall founder, author and digital nomad Belinda Waldock, and Jess Ratty, fellow Digital Nomad, founder of Team Jess, known for her work at Crowdfunder & The Eden Project were interviewed as part of the show.
Agile on the Beach, the globally renound agile technology conference held annually in Falmouth for the past 8 years. The conference being held this July, this year celebrates a 50:50 ratio of female:male speakers, and a growing attendance rate for women from local and global tech communities. The conference has been pro-active in developing a conference that attracts a diversity of attendees and speakers, aiming to create an event where all feel welcome and comfortable.
Business Support for Women in Tech
The Superfast Business Cornwall programme is providing a great Women in Tech programme of events, alongside their great support to local businesses and funding to invest further into their growth plans, and there are plans to expand and upgrade Cornwall’s superfast connectivity even further. A wide range of Business Support including EU convergence funded support with a technology focus has been available over the past year, working towards helping Cornwall’s Tech sector to become a key employer and economic contributor for the county.
