Inside The Tech Academy, 1st Edition: Max Oates

Tech Cornwall is all about empowering local talent; opening up exciting opportunities in Cornwall’s buzzing tech scene.

Enter the Tech Academy: a powerhouse of hands-on workshops, Agile and Scrum certifications, and career-boosting programs designed to make tech accessible to everyone – no matter your age, background, or experience level.

And then there’s Cornwall Tech Jam – a free, monthly event that’s as inspiring as it is exciting. It’s where creativity collides with cutting-edge tech, and people of all ages come to learn, explore, and innovate.

None of this would be possible without our incredible ambassadors, like Max Oates. Every month, Max volunteers his time to mentor and inspire future tech leaders.

“I’ve said on multiple occasions, I wish something like the Tech Jam existed when I was a kid.”

We caught up with Max to hear about his journey, career, and why he’s so passionate about giving back. Here’s what he had to say.

Could you tell us a bit about your background and what initially drew you to the tech industry?

I’m a software engineer that specialises in the games industry, but I also have experience in Artificial Intelligence and Software development.

I’ve lived in Cornwall my entire life and hope for that to remain, with the growing tech industry down here in Cornwall.

I’ve always had an interest in technology for as long as I can remember, from wanting to build massive machines as a kid to now developing games and software.

How did you first hear about Tech Cornwall’s Cornwall Tech Jam?

I heard about the Tech Jams in 2018 when one was being hosted at Heartlands in Pool. I spoke to Tech Cornwall’s Youth Programme Coordinator, Robert Wiltshire, who was running the event, and asked about volunteering.

What made you want to begin volunteering with the Tech Jam?

Originally, I volunteered as a way to show that I was engaging with technology outside of academia, while also helping to improve my team building and social skills.

As time has gone by, my desire to volunteer has now transformed into wanting to help people.

Have you developed any skills whilst volunteering that you foresee being useful in your career?

Mainly my soft skills regarding team working, communication and adaptability / improvisation have improved. As for my technical skills, problem solving and abilities dwith Python have improved as well.

What value have your experiences with Tech Cornwall had on applying for jobs and internships?

It has proven to employers, or people in the industry, that I have experience working with large groups of all ages, while also showing that I am adaptable and work to the best of my abilities.

How has being involved with Tech Cornwall affected your approach to tech innovation?

It amazes me how varied and accessible technology is to everyone nowadays. I’ve said on multiple occasions I wish something like the Tech Jam existed when I was a kid, as it would have boosted my engagement and nudged me to my chosen career at a younger age (and spared me much soul searching.)

What would you say to someone considering signing up to volunteer for Tech Cornwall events?

If you’re looking for an inspiring way to meet people and interact with the local tech community then I would suggest volunteering for Tech Jams, as they have helped me as much as it has people coming to the events.

For those curious about pursuing a tech career, why are programmes like the Tech Jam important?

It’s a wonderful environment to build your skills in programming, while also being helped by experienced individuals (which saves you some headaches when you’re on your own).

It’s also a good place to build your social skills. I’ve seen many people build connections just by asking for help or showing interest in one another’s work.

Most Tech Jams are open to all ages, however if you’re an adult you can also join the Tech Jam late events that are run from time to time.
