Cornwall-based software startup, PixieBooks, is celebrating the launch of its groundbreaking product: an AI-powered receipt processing service that allows users to process expense receipts simply by sending a picture on WhatsApp or email.
Designed and built by a team of software engineers and finance professionals in Redruth, PixieBooks allows its users to submit a receipt in seconds, not minutes. Based on successful trials with local accountancy firms, it’s estimated that PixieBooks could save the average business several hours per week in manual data entry.
No more data entry. No more headaches.
Unlike traditional accounting tools, PixieBooks removes the need for technical knowledge or creating endless rules for every purchase. It uses AI to read receipts sent via WhatsApp and then quickly extracts and categorises key data—including VAT rates, nominal codes, and currencies. This information is then automatically uploaded into the user’s accounting software. PixieBooks currently supports Xero, but there are plans to add support for others, including QuickBooks, Sage, Google Sheets, and more, in future.
To make bookkeeping more accessible for smaller firms, PixieBooks is free for users to submit up to 20 receipts per month—ideal for sole traders and microbusinesses. After that, unlimited usage is available for just £9 per month, offering a cost-effective solution for growing businesses and busy accountants alike.
Finance Director, Raven Beale says: “Our mission is simple: to eliminate the bookkeeping burden for business owners and the accountants who support them. We believe accountancy should be about insights and strategy—not chasing receipts and typing up numbers. And, similarly, business owners shouldn’t be wasting their time worrying about storing physical receipts or painstakingly recording them.”
PixieBooks joins Cornwall’s thriving tech ecosystem
The launch of PixieBooks marks the latest addition to Cornwall’s expanding tech sector. Over the past decade, the region has seen a wave of innovative startups and digital enterprises choosing to base themselves in the South West, supported by strong community networks, initiatives like Tech Cornwall, and a lifestyle that fosters creativity and collaboration.
Built for Cornwall, ready for the UK
While PixieBooks intends to scale nationally, the company is proud of its Cornish roots. The team is initially focusing on helping local accountants and bookkeepers, encouraging them to trial the product and become early adopters.
“Cornwall is a brilliant place to start something new,” adds Raven. “Local accountancy firms were among our early testers and have helped us create an excellent product. The proof is in the pudding: these firms are now among our first paying customers. We’d love to help more accountants save time—for them and their clients.”
