Cornwall’s tech industry is expanding rapidly, creating a demand for professionals with up-to-date skills and industry knowledge.
Masterclasses provide hands-on training that sharpens problem-solving skills, keeps professionals ahead of industry changes, and opens doors to new career opportunities through expert-led sessions and peer collaboration.
“ It’s easy to follow the same patterns in day-to-day work, but sometimes a fresh perspective can make all the difference..”
With nearly 30 years in the tech industry, Trystan Negus, Director of Tridian Software, regularly attends our Masterclasses to refine his skills and stay connected with the tech community.
We spoke to Trystan about his journey, the skills he’s gained, and why these sessions have become an essential part of his professional growth.
Could you tell us a bit about your background and what initially drew you to the tech industry?
I started out in physics. I always enjoyed solving logical puzzles and tech felt like the ultimate playground for that. I started coding to figure out how things worked and then realised that tech isn’t just about coding; it’s about problem-solving on a larger scale. I’m still working happily in the field 27 years later. The industry is always evolving so it never gets boring.
How did you first hear about our training opportunities?
I heard about the opportunities with Tech Cornwall through word of mouth. I’d been looking for ways to keep my skills sharp and stay connected with the local tech scene, so it seemed like a perfect fit.
You take part in our masterclasses – how valuable have these been for your skills development?
They’ve been hugely valuable. They’re practical, hands-on and tailored to what’s actually relevant in the industry. The organisers often seek feedback on topics to visit, too, so it feels like a customised experience.
Are there any particular memorable moments that you have taken away from the masterclasses? Could you share the specifics?
One moment that comes to mind was a technical session on the difficulties of dealing with dates and times in code. The instructor shared a technique that I’ve revisited many times since. It was a simple tweak to my approach, but the benefits were huge and it drove home the importance of learning from others in the industry. It’s easy to follow the same patterns in day-to-day work, but sometimes a fresh perspective can make all the difference.
Do you find yourself using any of the skills developed through the training regularly?
Absolutely. Things like software design strategies and new coding techniques pop up regularly in my daily work. Even the soft skills, like effective communication, have had a real impact.
How has being involved with Tech Cornwall affected your career opportunities and your approach to tech innovation?
It’s been very beneficial. I’ve used techniques from the masterclasses to produce tangibly better deliverables in contract projects, which always helps because then you’re more likely to work on the clients’ next project! Learning from others in the industry makes it easier to innovate because you’re trying new approaches and thinking more creatively.
What do you think sets Tech Cornwall apart from other training programmes or learning experiences?
The local focus is key – the team understands the challenges and opportunities in Cornwall. It’s also not just a training program; it’s a community. Yes, you’re learning skills, but it feels like being part of something bigger.
What would you say to someone considering signing up for Tech Cornwall’s training programmes, especially if they’re coming from a non-tech background?
Don’t overthink it – just get stuck in. I started my career without a tech qualification. The satisfaction of solving a problem or building something is hard to match. The community is welcoming and supportive, and you’ll be surprised at how quickly you’ll pick things up.
For those curious about pursuing a tech career, why do you believe now is the right time to join programs like those offered by Tech Cornwall?
The industry is in an exciting place. AI and machine learning are amongst many fields with great potential and there’s a real need for people who can navigate them. Also, with remote work becoming much more common, you’re not limited to local opportunities. It’s a great time to get involved.
